End of an Era - The High Arctic

(August 16 - 31, 2010) Two countries, one midnight sun, 16 days - Cruise through Smith Sound and Kane Basin, along the eastern coast of Ellesmere Island. The icebreaker will make an End of an Era call at Qaanaaq, Greenland. Midway through this Arctic adventure, you may find yourself about 10 degrees from the North Pole. Now that is the High Arctic!

Baffin Island - The fifth largest island in the world, it may be ‘Helluland’ from the Saga of Erik the Red.
Axel Heiberg Island - One of the larger islands of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago, known for its unusual fossil forests.
Beechey Island - Site of three graves of Franklin's men, who likely died from lead poisoning from tins of provisions.
Bylot Island - The island's north shore is a polar bear maternity den area; whales and seals frequent the waters.
Devon Island - Earth’s largest uninhabited island, it supports a scant number of muskoxen, small birds and mammals.
Fort Conger - Established in 1881 as a polar exploration camp, the rugged landscapeis now uninhabited by humans.
Grise Fjord - Inuktitut for "place that never thaws,” it is the northernmost civilian settlement in North America.
Jones Sound - First known European to sight uninhabited waterway was English explorer William Baffin in 1616.
Lincoln Sea - Alert, the northernmost inhabited place in the world, is the only populated place along its shore.
Prince Leopold Island - The island and its cliffs are a vital area for breeding marine birds in the Canadian Arctic.
Qaanaaq, Greenland - Formerly called Thule, the inhabitants speak the West Greenlandic language; many also speak Inuktun.
Smith Sound - Uninhabited sea passage between Greenland and Ellesmere Island discovered in 1616 by William Baffin.
