$25 Million - the Price Tag of Hobart's New Wharf Facilities

By prisca.campbell

We told you recently that Hobart, Australia, might lose its title of "Australia's Gateway to Antarctica" if the harbor is not modernized. Today we learn the price tag - $25 million Australian dollars (USD$25.79). That title generates 1600 jobs and adds $182 million to the state's coffers.

One of the problems in need of fixing is that some of the concrete in the wharf construction has cancer. That's a quote from the Mercury arcticle. I didn't know concrete and cancer could be used in the same sentence with meaning. So I googled it...wouldn't you? The expression is colloquial - but colorful! Surprisngly there are several forms of concrete cancer, but it appears the cause is consistent - water penetration. Wharf, concrete cancer, water penetration - it all adds up.

So does our interest in Hobart, the staging point for Antarctica's Far East. The grand finale of the 20 year career of the legendary Kapitan Khlebnikov begins in Hobart, December 6, 2011. Just 12 days before the centennial of Amundsen's successful attempt to be the first man to reach the South Pole. You can bet you'll be raising a glass of bubbly to the feat if you are aboard.
