Presentations Due to High Winds - December 26, 2008

During the night we had reached our position in the ice and the ship was about 26 miles from McMurdo. Mt Erebus was directly ahead of the ship, looking fantastic with no clouds over the summit and the ice glistening in the sunlight. However, outside was a gale force wind, gusting up to 35 knots, which definitely put paid to any helicopter flying. The plan was that we would wait out the day and see what happens with the weather, as McMurdo had given permission for us to go and visit them tomorrow instead of today. Therefore at 9 a.m.

Cape Evans - December 24, 2008

While we were all ashore yesterday, rather large tidal cracks opened up in front of the ship, so Captain Pavel took the opportunity of using these and started up the engines and moved almost 30 miles. So when we woke this morning we were quite close to Cape Evans. This is the site of Scott’s Hut, and another very special place to visit. Straight after breakfast helicopter operations started up and off we all went to visit this very historical site. It was from this hut that Scott and his party departed to travel to the South Pole and never to return. Ghosts are definitely present in this
