As we pulled into the Ushuaia Harbor, you could sense the anxiety – similar to our departure – the trip was over, leaving new friends, memories of the past twelve days together, and all the adventures we have collectively, and individually, shared.

There was a certain sense of finality today as we opened our doors and the suitcases were lining the hallways. We will have our last lectures today, our last lunch, our last dinner, and our final goodbyes to new friends and casual acquaintances we have met during this special expedition.

February 11, 2011 - Day Nine: Goodbye Antarctica and Hello Drake

Our final day of excursions and there is a bit of sadness in the morning dining area as we will leave the continent of Antarctica and spend more than two days to cross the Drake Passage. As it was before our departure from Ushuaia, discussion is centering around speculation of the Drake’s possible fury as we were spared on our way south.

February 9 - Day Seven: Stepping Foot on the Continent

As we meet for breakfast, the events and stories abound from those who spent last night camping on the ice. It was an interesting group of about thirty passengers who decided to spend the night on the ice – age was not a factor and from what I could tell the adventure of spending a night was the main draw to those who braved the natural elements – to add it to their lists of Antarctic firsts.

We are one day closer to a landing on the actual continent of Antarctica, but not quite there today. The overnight passage was a bit rough and several of us were awoken in the night by the tossing of the ship as we passed another rough bit of water.

We are finally arriving to Antarctica and emotions are running high with anticipation of our first shore visit! Since yesterday afternoon the ship slowed significantly in order to be on time and to avoid arriving to our destination in the middle of the night.

February 6, 2011 - Day Three: Crossing into the Geopolitical Boundary of Antarctica

The morning announcement was delivered at 7:30 containing the message that having passed 60-degress we are now inside of Antarctica! It was a welcomed announcement as passengers are ready to land ashore, but the scenery remains the same – open ocean – just a bit of fog marks the visual difference for us.

February 5, 2011 - Heading South and the Drake Passage

There was a lot of chatter last night about the possibility of not making breakfast due to seasickness – again the lingering anxiety of the Drake Passage. The loudspeaker came on at an early 7:30 to announce the surprise of calm seas and impending breakfast.
