Molting gentoo penguin at Neko Harbour, Antarctica. When penguins molt it takes quite a bit of energy. They do not eat or move. We had to be very careful not to disturb this fellow and cause him to expend extra energy. A zoom lens was used so we did not have to get too close! This is a pair of Gentoo penguins. Their white cap, black & orange beak, long tail and pinkish toned feet stand out against the rocky shores of the Antarctic Peninsula. Despite their awkward waddle on land, they are very quick in the water. If you are lucky, you may catch a glimpse of some swimming behind you during your Zodiac Cruise. This photos was taken from my cabin window during my recent Antarctic Explorer voyage in Dec. 2012 at about 11:00pm. The night sky lights up with beautiful hues of pink, yellow & orange and reflect beautifully off the calm water.
