The Drake Passage

Today was pretty quiet as we entered our first full day of our return trip across the Drake Passage. We have experienced some rockiness, but despite the waves it's still pretty calm.

Headed North

When we woke up this morning, the ship was rocking back and forth a bit harder than we had become accustomed to. There were up to 70 knot winds and 9 to 10 foot swells.

Continental Landing

Today we set foot on the Antarctic Peninsula, at Neko Harbour! The landing site was located on Andvord Bay, and the beach was covered with Gentoo penguins.

Lemaire Channel

This morning we had an especially early wake-up call, at 6:00 am, for around 6:30 we began our passage through one of the most beautiful places on earth, the Lemaire Channel.

Our first landing

We awoke this morning to an announcement that we had crossed the 60th parallel during the night and were now officially in Antarctic waters. The blue skies were gone, but with a strong tail wind and smooth waters we making good time in crossing the Drake Passage.

The Drake Passage

We began our travel through the Drake Passage around midnight. The gentle rocking of the boat became more intense. What seemed to many as a rough ride was actually considered surprisingly calm weather by the crew.

Embarkation Day

It was quite an adventure getting from Washington, D.C., to Ushuaia, our embarkation point in southern Argentina. Over the course of 29 hours, we took three flights via four airports before arriving at "el fin del mundo."

The Countdown
