Day 1 - Aboard Ocean Nova - My Name is Jakob Lee and I'm 12 Years Old

My name is Jakob Lee and I'm 12 years old. I live in Owen Sound, Ont., Canada and this is my first trip to the Antarctic. It has been a dream of mine since I was 5 years old and saw pictures of my first penguin. Now I can't wait to see the real thing. We flew from Toronto to Buenos Aires to Ushuaia to meet the ship. Ushuaia is a pretty cool town surrounded by mountains on all sides. It was fun to walk around and see all the shops and sights of the town including the ship, Ocean Nova, which was waiting at the dock.
I was pumped to get on the ship and check out all the areas. My favourite is the library because of the great view and a door to an outside deck area.
Great for spotting whales and birds I hope! Next we checked out our room and unpacked our bags as everyone boarded. It is small but comfortable but I'm a little worried about the shower, very tiny!
Later, as we were pulling out we got sized up for our jackets...thick, warm, and a cool yellow colour! We even get to take them home!
All that was left to do was eat an amazing supper and go to bed but before that we got to see the pilot make his get away. The pilot is a guy who's job it is to make sure that the ship gets out of harbour safely and apparently this port is very narrow and dangerous. Anyway, in the dark a small boat suddenly pulled up beside the ship and the pilot climbed down a step ladder, onto the boat and sped away. It was like a movie!
An exciting end to a an exciting day!
