Today was amazing. We got up early for breakfast and then got ready to make our first landing. It was raining but that didn't stop the penguins from racing around our boat. It was no different on the beach after the zodiac dropped us off...penguins everywhere! There were so many of them and they looked so funny wobbling around the shore until they jumped in the water and they took off. That wasn't the end of it...there were three different types of seals including the very aggressive fur seals. One even started chasing after us! We just clapped our hands and as long as we were facing in it's direction it wouldn't keep coming. There were also elephant seals and weddel seals on the islands. There were also lots of cool birds. Too soon we had to head back to the ship for lunch and our next landing.
In the afternoon, the Ocean Nova took us to an awesome place....Deception Island. This island is kind of hollow in the middle...not hollow but filled with water. The land surrounding the water is a circle of cliffs with one large landing area. They used this area for whaling a long time ago and there was still some old buildings and whale bones on the beach. The wildest part of this place was that it is actually an active volcano...the water is the crater and the land on the side is the rim of the volcano! If you dig your hand into the beach sand then you can feel the heat of the volcano! This island had some more penguins and fur seals but it also had a great hike to the top of a cliff were the view was unreal!
Finally it was home for supper...what a day! I still can't believe I was walking in a volcano!
