The Drake Passage
The Drake Passage

A few people got sick but I think overall people are okay, often a bit sleepy from the nausea medications. It was sunny, with blue skies all day long. We spent the greater part of the day on deck watching the wandering albatrosses (ten-foot wingspans!), giant petrels, and open-ocean birds that were following the ship. In the late afternoon, we were treated to multiple whale sightings. A pod of six to ten fin whales--second only in size to the blue whale--could be seen ahead of the ship.
This really got everyone excited. We also had a mandatory zodiac briefing. This session went over the rules about what we are and aren't permitted to do when on land. The rules in Antarctica are quite strict and great effort is taken to not harass the wildlife, pollute the landscape, or accidentally introduce any exotic species. We were glad to see Quark take this all so seriously. We were really blessed with the weather today and hope tomorrow is nice too. We have been making excellent time and are a little ahead of schedule, so hopefully that means more time in Antarctica. Tomorrow will be another day at sea, and we hope to make our first landing on Wednesday, December 23rd. Everyone seems to be really anxious to finally see the icebergs, penguins, and seals. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!!

We talked to Jenn and David on Christmas. We found out then that they email the blogs to Quark for uploading. I hope on Monday we will get a really big update as the Quark offices will reopen. As a Mom I was getting a little worried since there was nothing after passing thru the Drake Passage. They said it has been incredibly beautiful and the weather beautiful. They said that each day they see something more beautiful. They are already planning for the other pole.
No blog since 21st December. When is the next update?
Merry Christmas! Love, the Godwins
Happy Birthday to Charlie and Happy Christmas Eve to you. We are looking forward to an update. At GanGan's and Aunt Kathy's.
Happy Christmas Eve from The States!
Our blanket of snow here in DC helps set the scene for reading your travel reports. Here's to calm seas all the way!
Please tell Digger & Bob that we're thinking about them and are SO excited about their trip! I'm Dig's wife Heather and you will hear a lot from me this trip :). Mobius misses Digger but we are holding down the fort. Hope everyone is having a fantastic time! Heather from North Reading, MA.
It sounds like you are having a 'whale' of a time!! LOL
I can't wait to see the pics!
Hey you two! Do post more details, so happy to hear that all is well and your time on ship has not turned into a rerun of the "Africa Queen" look forward to hearing more and Happy Christmas, xoxo, Morgan
I'm Digger's wife and Bob's step-daughter. Please let them know I say hello and I hope they didn't get sea sick! Thanks for blogging so I can keep track of your wonderful adventure - please blog as much as possible for us holding down the fort on the home front.
I find it incredibly ironic that you two are headed to Antarctica while we're experiencing "Snowpocalypse" (as the weathermen are calling it) here in DC! I thought of you both as I trudged up the snow-covered stairs to our apartment building on Saturday - it felt like I was climbing an Antarctic mountain!
