Embarkation Day

Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, is nestled between the Beagle Channel and the southern Andes. The highlight of our time there was a half-day visit to the Tierra del Fuego National Park. The landscape is quite simply some of the most beautiful we've ever seen, with snow-capped peaks, lakes, and alpine valleys. We saw a great deal of waterfowl, including Kelp geese and crested ducks. We also had the opportunity to drive to the end of the Pan-American Highway, which runs all the way from Alaska and across North, Central, and South America before terminating inside the park. After all we've experienced over the past several days, it's hard to believe that our journey has just begun. This afternoon, we boarded the Clipper Adventurer and set out on our voyage to Antarctica. The mood on the ship is absolute excitement and curiosity. The staff seems experienced, extremely knowledgeable, and friendly. Since departing we have had a few introductory meetings, a lifeboat drill, and our first meal together. Tonight we enter the Drake Passage. Given its reputation for rough waters, we're all a bit anxious!

Hi, Aunt Georgia! This trip is fantastic. The penguins are adorable and even more so when they slide around on their bellies. We will be sending you pics when we get home. Merry Christmas!
