Half Moon Island

By Blog.Admin

This morning we woke up at Half Moon Island. Breakfast was a bit earlier so that we could get onto the island as soon as possible. As we loaded into the zodiacs, the weather was not too promising. It was a bit windy and a slight rain was falling. The landing area had chinstrap penguins right there, so the cameras were dug out of their protective bags and people started taking pics. Michael, our on board ornithologist, led us off on a short hike up to a rookery. We crossed the island and walked along the beach before turning inland again. Up a slight rise and we got a great view of the nesting birds. There were still a few penguins stealing rocks, so there were a few squabbles here and there. We also saw the Macaroni penguin that lives here. Like the King penguin yesterday, he did look a little bit lonely.

We headed back down and then went off down the beach with Phil, our historian. He was proposing a hike along the shoreline that would include some scrambling over big boulders. About this time, the sun started peaking out as well. Linnea and I have decided that we will put sunscreen on and carry sunglasses regardless of what the weather looks like when we leave the boat. It changes so fast! On our hike we saw more penguins down by the water. It was quite fun to watch them hop from rock to rock. I realized that I feel a bit like a penguin out of water when I am all kitted out with life jacket, parka, boots, backpack and camera case!

We were part way down the island when the call came for everyone to return to the ship. The wind had been building and the water was getting rough. Now we are cruising along Livingston Island and enjoying the spectacular views of the mountains. The sun is out once again! We are on our way to Deception Island, about a four hour cruise from here
