He will blog his way to the North Pole - June 23 to July 7, 2011

Giovanni Savaglio won our Blog Your Way to the North Pole contest. He has sent us his first post. We look forward to others as his embarkation day approaches.
[May 26, 2011] Allow me to introduce myself. I am Giovanni Savaglio. I was born in southern Italy in 1963 and immigrated to Chicago, Illnois in 1969. Growing up in Chicago, I obtained a Masters of Science in Nursing and am a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).
As a Nure Anesthetist I am proud to say I've taken thousands of patients on trips to dreamland...round trips each time. As for myself, I fondly recall that as a youngster I often found myself daydreaming of being at locations I had read about in books. Given the opportunity and the means, I eventually ventured to many of these locations. Such examples are that having read "Christ stopped at Eboli" by Carlo Levi, I made my way to Aliano and Matera, Italy. "Schindler's List" by Thomas Keneally found me in Krakow, Poland. with a pilgrimate to Auschwitz. It was reading "South" by my childhood hero Sir Ernest Shackletong that ultimately not only led me to South Georgia (the island) and Antarctica, but as well to my wife Kerrie, who I met on the journey. Following the union of Kerrie and I, we have a son named Jovi to whom we have given the name of Ernest to honor my hero who's spirit has brought us all together.
I am now on the threshold of being able to continue my passion of reaching places I've read about. Likewise I am in a position of taking you, the reader, with me to such locations that in many ways are dream like. As with my patients, I look to make this a pleasant round trip. So please stamp your ticket by logging in on my blog to start our trip at Helsinki, Finland, enter Murmansk, Russia, and voyage North to the home of Santa and polar bears, to a point raced to and sought by the likes of Peary, Nansen, and Cook. This finish line is as far as the star that has guided mankind, whalers, explorers, and all that have sought to leave and return home. Read with me as we come to stand at 90°N - "the top of the world" - a point where all around is South. Should you pause, blink or read slowly, you'll find this point has moved with the drifting ice.
So keep up with my blog as just like Frdtjof Nansen, we seek to make shore at Franz Josef Land. Where Nansen fought for his survival, we shall seek it for it's beautiful views, majestic wildlife and precious flora. As we return to Murmansk and Helsinki, I hope you feel as though you have shared in this wondrous and magical Arctic expedition to the North Pole.
God Speed,
Giovanni
