Headed North
By Blog.Admin
26 Dec 2009As a result of the rougher weather, our planned landing in the South Shetland Islands had to be cancelled, and the decision was made to start heading north across the Drake Passage. When we woke up this morning, the ship was rocking back and forth a bit harder than we had become accustomed to. There were up to 70 knot winds and 9 to 10 foot swells.
As a result of the rougher weather, our planned landing in the South Shetland Islands had to be cancelled, and the decision was made to start heading north across the Drake Passage. So this morning, we bade farewell to the Antarctic and began heading north. The good news is that since we'll be crossing the Passage ahead of schedule, we might have the chance to see fabled Cape Horn on our way back. We're keeping our fingers crossed! In the meantime, we'll be keeping an eye out for wildlife. Despite the weather, and the slippery decks, we saw a sooty albatross and lots of petrels. We're hoping that the skies will clear up a bit tomorrow.
After three and half days of Zodiac cruises and trips ashore, we're finding ourselves with lots of downtime. But the expedition team is keeping us occupied, with lectures on Antarctic wildlife and history, as well as special film screenings--last night we watched John Carpenter's "The Thing," one of the best bad movies of all time, which just happens to take place in Antarctica. The rest of the time, we've been acting like Weddell seals. Long periods of napping, broken up by stretching and mealtimes. It's pretty nice.
