Heading south towards the ice...December 17, 2008

Once we left Campbell Island, we headed south towards the ice. Jonas, our Expedition Leader, had explained that the weather conditions were very bad at Enderby Island, so it would serve no purpose to try and make a landing with a low pressure system seemingly fixed over this area.
We still had lots of wonderful albatross soaring around the ship, enjoying the winds and - maybe - the continuous rain. For us - less well adapted to the environment - the deck was not so pleasant. The Bridge and the Lounge became the locations from which we watched those magnificent creatures in effortless flight.
This morning, Barrie taught us all about rocks and basic geology. The rocks on Campbell Island were impressive, but we anticipate seeing even more impressive rocks further into the Ross Sea. That session was followed by Unveiling the Antarctic - Bob's introduction to the incredible history of discovery of this area.
We attend an Art Workshop after lunch, led by Suzanne Commerford, a talented guest aboard. We have some very keen artists amongst us. After the workshop, their efforts were displayed on the walls of the lounge.
We do have a very talented and experienced photographer on board, Sue Flood, who has worked for the BBC with the Blue Planet series. She gave a wonderful talk this afternoon on digital photography tips to help us capture the special beauty of Antarctica.
