Resolutely Protecting Peary Caribou

By Blog.Admin

If you sail with us on either the Tanquary Fjord or Ellesmere Island End of an Era expeditions, you'll visit Resolute. The hamlet on Cornwallis Island is the embarkation point for both cruises. The people of Resolute are supporting the creation of a new park on Bathurst Island, just north and west of Cornwallis Island. The Canadian government is planniing to set aside 5,700 square kilometers around the island as a conservation zone. Bathurst Island is uninhabited, by the way. The new park will encompass the habitat of polar bears, Arctic foxes and Peary caribou. Economic benefits are anticipated as some areas of Bathurst Island will not be protected, because of high mineral and hydrocarbon potential. Do we have an expedition planned to visit the new park? Not yet. When it opens, we won't have an icebreaker, the only kind of passenger vessel permitted to travel that far north. So, if you want even a glimpse of the region, then book a cabin to Tanquary Fjord. It is as close as you can get at this time!
