Spitsbergen, Greenland, Iceland - Scott Waldron Reports

Scott Waldron is onboard Akademik Shokalskiy, sailing from Spitsbergen via Eastern Greenland to Iceland. When he isn't on a ship he assists our guests who dream of adding to their adventure.
Day 1 (July 17, 2010) – Longyearbyen, Svalbard – I woke up this morning to a brisk Arctic morning, clear sky's and fresh clean air. After a great buffet breakfast at the Radisson Blu Polar Hotel. I walked up Longyearbyen's main street, visiting the many shops and outdoor apparel stores that line the street. The history of this old mining town is very visible across its landscape with old mining shafts and pulley systems still dotting the hills surrounding the town.
At approx 330PM, we were picked up at our hotel by our local ground agent and transferred to the Akademik Shokalskiy and we where met by all of the Quark Staff at the gangway for a “headshot” of each passenger. I learned the photo was to be displayed onboard to assist us in getting to know everyone. I thought this was a nice touch for this small group of 34 passengers as we had already starting to become part of the team.
After our Ship Saftey and Medical Briefing in the lecture room on Deck 2, we joined the Captain in The Bar for a Welcome Cocktail Party, then off to dinner on Deck 3. After a full day for all settling into our cabins, and beds, was first and foremost for many.
