Summer Wedding - December 21, 2008

Today we awoke to another glorious day with sunshine and very little wind. We were cruising the area of Cape Hallett, but the ice was really severe and there was no chance of getting in close enough to make a landing. We then moved on to Coulman Island, but again the ice prevented any landing. Instead, Jonas offered helicopter sightseeing flights over and around the Island. It was perfect conditions for these flights and we probably saw more than we would have had we been able to go ashore. We will try to make a landing on Coulman Island on our way north when maybe the ice will have broken up.
After lunch and our documentary movie, Kara gave a wonderful talk on Seals of Antarctica. Apart from Campbell Island we have not seen too many seals, but we should get the chance of seeing the fairly rare Ross Seals as we are definitely in their natural habitat.
At a little after 6 PM we all gathered on the deck at the back of the bridge to join Lilian and Martin for their Antarctic wedding ceremony. Captain Pavel was present in his official uniform and we all shared
champagne. It was cold outside, but the bride looked beautiful in a wonderful dress with almost a mermaid touch to it, and the groom looked very handsome. Bob did the actual ceremony, as he has lots of experience from his days at South Georgia where he was an official for wedding ceremonies.
It was a special occasion for everyone, even if the actual wedding was not an official legally binding occasion.
We then adjourned to the bar, where the bride and groom mixed with the passengers and everyone enjoyed Debbie’s drink of the day, even if it was a rather lethal looking green mixture. It was exciting to have such a special occasion on board and for us all to feel part of the celebration.
