The sun is shining in Antarctica!
The sun is shining in Antarctica!
By Blog.Admin
The day couldn't have started any better. I woke up with Kirsten's wake up call on the intercom, as usual, but laziness forced me to stay in bed 30 extra minutes, also usual! As soon as I get up, the first thing I normally do is to look out the cabin "window."My dear God! Today the sun was shining, the sky was half blue, half cloudy, and I had this enormous set of glaciers, mountains and floating icebergs in front of me. The colors were simply incredible. I obviously had to go to the outside deck as quick as possible! We were arriving at Danco Island -10 minutes after and I was on the deck!
The view was stunning. All around I could see mountains with crevassed glaciers, snow, ice sculptures floating around, incredible textures, groups of Gentoo penguins were diving and swimming and a few birds gliding nearby. There was so much life in this small piece of the ocean. We arrived in Danco Island by Zodiac going around small floating crystal blue icebergs. While several Gentoo penguins inspected this new species of suited up mammals, we went up the 180m hill. Pink penguin highways were at our left, and the more we went up the hill, the better the view became!
Regarding the pink color, I always have some doubts on its origin. Sometimes it is caused by a snow Algae, but some other times, my dear readers, it is really Penguin guano. Let me rephrase it, Pengui poo, so, you just never know. From the top we had a spectacular 360 degree view over a set of mountains and heavily crevassed blue colored glaciers, icebergs and imagine this, a sea of tranquility which provided perfect mirror effects.
We were incredibly surprised with Danco, so what can we say about Neko? After a medium sized trekking to the top of the mountain, it was time to sit down contemplating the extraordinary views over a bay with a heavily crevassed glacier surrounding it. The same glacier we heard cracking several times! We slid down the mountain, took hundreds of photos, laughed a lot and we got a small carving glacier on video - but it wasn’t over. Oh no it wasn't - I was already having a hot shower back in my cabin when my dear friend Marco entered the room and said something like, "Luis, move it! Forget the shower and let's dive again in Antarctica waters!"
I was not understanding or correctly processing the word "again", but soon I got it! People where lined up in the gangway ready for another polar plunge, but this one, made from the ship in an extraordinary natural scenery. There was even a Zodiac with Damien and Alex (Quark staff), only for taking pictures! And it was awesome!
The red faces people make when they get out of the water is sooo funny! The most amazing was that 200 meters away, a Humpback whale was checking us out! Unbelievable, I've dived in Antarctica relatively close to a whale. For dinner, we had a cool barbecue directly in the stern of the ship! What an idea! Eating in an incredible natural environment, with penguins, whales and seals around - like I say back in Portugal - Brutal! Overwhelmed that's how I feel!

I really loved reading your blog. It was very well authored and easy to understand. Unlike additional blogs I have read which are really not tht good. I also found your posts very interesting. In fact after reading, I had to go show it to my friend and he enjoyed it as well! Thanks so much for this! I have not been this thrilled by a blog post for quite some time! You’ve got it, whatever that means in blogging. Anyway, You’re definitely someone that has something to say that people should hear. Keep up the wonderful job. I love following this blog. Last week I was in Antarctica on the Clipper Adventurer and my favourite landing was on Danko Island. I am reliving my trip through your blog. You are right. On a clear blue-sky day, the colours are amazing.
