The Vanishing Arctic - International Study Predicts
By prisca.campbell
Climate change is to blame for the vanishing Arctic according to a new study released by an international team of scientists. Researchers from the University of Nebraska, the Korean Polar Research Institute and Seoul National University predict that by 2009 44% of Canadian mainland tundra will be replaced by boreal forest or shrubs. The Russian Arctic will also be adversely affected dramatically as well.
Hardly a silver lining
The report also predicts that the Canadian High Arctic and Greenland will see the expansion of tundra as glaciers retreat. This "good news" is not sufficient to protect caribou and breeding grounds of migratory birds.
Last Chance to See the Arctic as we know it aboard Kapitan Khlebhnikov
In just 17 weeks - July 11, 2011 - our icebreaker Kapitan Khlebnikov will begin an epic 65-day circumnavigation of the Arctic Ocean. From Anadyr, Russia, the legendary vessel will transit the Northeast Passage - Russia's Arctic sea route from Asia to Europe. The voyage continues from Murmansk, to Svalbard, then down the eastern coast of Greenland, rounding the southern tip, before calling in at Kangerlussuaq. The final leg of the journey is through Canada's threatened High Arctic, following the route of Roald Amundsen, the first man to navigate the Northwest Passage.
