Heading south towards the ice...December 17, 2008

By Blog.Admin

Once we left Campbell Island, we headed south towards the ice. Jonas, our Expedition Leader, had explained that the weather conditions were very bad at Enderby Island, so it would serve no purpose to try and make a landing with a low pressure system seemingly fixed over this area. We still had lots of wonderful albatross soaring around the ship, enjoying the winds and - maybe - the continuous rain. For us - less well adapted to the environment - the deck was not so pleasant.

Fog and Campbell Island - Tuesday, December 16, 2008

By Blog.Admin

We had a little more rolling as we work this morning. With the wind and wet weather came fog. Typical conditions for these latitudes, and welcomed by the birds. A wonderful albatross flew all around the ship with some Cape Petrels - also known as Pintados. We had a fleeting glimpse of sea lions in the water, before our presentation all about penguins. At 11 AM, we attended a briefing about our visit to Campbell Island. We saw maps of the island and the boardwalk along which we would stroll.

It was a good chance to get our sea legs, and become used to the rather peculiar movements of Kapitan Khlebnikov. We were awakened again, at 7:30 AM, by Jonas, announcing breakfast and informing of us current weather conditions.

The motor coach drive from Christchurch to Lyttelton was under overcast skies. After 45 minutes, we emerged from the mountain tunnel to see before us, a lovely little port surrounded on three sides by mountians.
