Call to Designate Antarctica as a World Heritage Site

UNESCO has not designated an entire continent as a World Heritage Site. Australia's Green Party is calling for that to change. The Party wants Antarctica to be granted the designation.

Antarctica's Far East - Glaciers Named

Six glaciers have been named in the Australian Antarctic Territory. Because all the glaciers are located within the region explored by Australia's great explorer Douglas Mawson, the names were chosen to honor other Australian heroes. Two of the glaciers named are in Antarctica's Far East: ANZAC Glacier and BANZARE Glacier.

Khlebnikov's role in Antarctic Research into Antibiotic Resistant Bacteria

This superbug everybody's talking about may be new, but the global threat of antibiotic resistant bacteria is not. In November 2009, two Swedish scientists sailed aboard Khlebnikov to collect samples of guano from bird colonies visited during an expedition to the Weddell Sea and the Falkland Islands.

100,000 Seabirds and their Guano

(August 8, 2010, 13:30) - Norwegian Bay - Hamish Fothergill Reporting - After an early wake up call of 5 o'clock and 45 minutes of preparation, we set off in one of the Zodiacs heading to Coburg Island to observe a really wonderful seabird cliff, home to an endless sprawl of guillemots punctuated by kittiwakes.
