Graham Charles
Graham Charles, also known as Grum, has a New Zealander's irreverent sense of humor and an international reputation as a kayaker. He wrote the definitive book on kayaking in New Zealand. He was on the first team to circumnavigate South Georgia - in sea kayaks!
When did you first work in Antarctica?
"In 1998, I was a Field Safety officer at Scott Base."
When did you first work in the Arctic?
"In 2002 - my first job was Kayak Guide."
What skills do you call on when you do your job?
"Oh-my-god – what isn't!!!!!! Human resource management, communication, mini project management, diplomacy, photography, interpretation, risk management – the list goes on forever..."
What keeps you coming back season after season?
"A passion for these wild places. To see and help guests understand how we might be able to look after these last remaining places and wildlife. To explore and see the enjoyment guests get out of a controlled adventure."
If you could time travel, what historic expedition would you join, and why?
"Amundsen – because he was ruthlessly efficient and got the job done and got out – same operating ethos as I have with my trips. BUT I would like to watch over the Shackleton saga and see the psychological conditions they had to deal with to understand how much we have lost in modern times."
Graham's advice for Polar Travelers
"South Georgia is the greatest place on the planet or listen to your guides!"
Graham wants you to know
"I love to adventure. Nothing is certain except that we'll work our butts off to have a good time. Asking what's around the next corner can yield so much more than the standard route."
