Michael Gatehouse, Biologist
Michael prefers being outdoors and has nurtured a passion for the Polar Regions for as long as he can remember. In 1985-86 he journeyed south for the first time with which undertook the first archaeological survey of Sir Douglas Mawson’s hut at Commonwealth Bay. Michael returned to Antarctica in 1992 to work on the film “The Last Husky”, a documentary about the last sled dog trip using huskies from Australia’s Mawson Station.
A keen mountaineer, Michael reached the summit of Vinson Massif in 1999 and in 2005 completed a 26 day east-west crossing of the Greenland ice-cap. He returned in 2007 as a member of Watkins Mountains Climbing Expedition, reaching a number of summits including the two highest mountains above the Arctic Circle and four previously unclimbed peaks. His other passions include sailing, sea-kayaking, cave diving and back-country skiing. Michael worked for many years as a diving instructor. When he can’t get outdoors Michael works as a lawyer in Melbourne.
