Xavier Cortada
Xavier Cortada traveled to Antarctica, where, as artist-in-residence, he created an installation at the South Pole. Based in Miami, the artist will travel to the North Pole with Quark Expeditions from June 23 to July 8, 2008. While at 90N he will install his South Pole piece. Guests on the voyage can participate in the event.
The New York Foundation of the Arts is sponsoring Xavier’s project. He is one of only six visual artists to receive assistance from the Foundation in 2008. The image, The Longitudinal Installation, South Pole (2007) depicts the piece as it appeared at the South Pole. Xavier was awarded the National Science Foundation Antarctic Artists and Writers Program grant for this installation.
Xavier has been commissioned to create art for the White House, the World Bank, the Florida Supreme Court, the Florida Governor’s Mansion, Miami City Hall and the South Pole Station.
