Clean up Svalbard

Protecting the Svalbard Islands

Svalbard is an Arctic archipelago under the authority of Norway. The Governor of Svalbard, Norway’s supreme representative for the islands, is charged with the responsibility of making Svalbard one of the best managed wildlife preserves in the world.

To achieve that goal, the Governor has instituted Clean Up Svalbard, a cooperative program that enlists the aid of tourism companies such as Quark Expeditions to collect refuse from beaches and wilderness areas. Two of Quark’s Adventure Ships will be participating in the program in 2008.

Guests aboard Akademik Shokalskiy and Akademik Sergey Vavilov will be invited to participate in the activities planned by our Expedition Teams. One of the strength of the Clean up Svalbard program is the opportunity it provides travelers to make immediate contributions toward the protection of the wilderness areas they are exploring.
