Quark Shares

From time to time, we are granted access to some exciting information photos, videos or  - in the case of Luciano Pires - cartoons. This is where we will share those surprises with you.

Alastair Fothergill of the BBC was aboard Kapitan Khlebnikov in the Weddell Sea. Flying in our helicopter he took an aerial photo of the Snow Hill Island Emperor Penguin rookery. We thank him for sharing it with us! Alastair was shooting an episode of Frozen Planet, the long anticipated sequel to Planet Earth. One of the episodes will cover polar tourism. The Snow Hill rookery is featured in that episode.

Quark on Television

Frozen Planet is only one of a number of documentaries to have been shot on our vessels. Scottish comedian and actor Billy Connolly sailed through the Northwest Passage on one of our ships. A TV series and a book resulted from the experience. Ireland's Crossing the Line Films has shot a number of documentaries aboard our icebreaker Kapitan Khlenikov. The award-winning film company returns to Khlebnikov in November 2010 to shoot a documentary about Tom Crean.

Quark Drops Names

Many people with intimate connections to the polar regions have sailed aboard our ships. One day in Christchurch, New Zealand, three disinguished guests of Kapitan Khlebnikov met and shared family stories. We were lucky enough to be given a photo of the occasion. Adrian Raeside, internationally-syndicated cartoonist, is also the grandson of Antarctic explorer Sir Charles Wright. Adrian sailed on Khlebnikov to complete his book based on his grandfather's journals. Alexandra Shackleton is the granddaughter of Sir Ernest Shackleton. She sailed on one of our semi-circumnavigations of Antarctica. Erica Wikander is one of contemporary Antarctica's polar pioneers.
