Mariano Curiel
Mariano first worked in the Arctic in 2004 as a Zodiac driver. The Argentinian began working in Antarctica the year before, as bartender and Zodiac driver. He has participated in 86 expeditions to the polar regions. He says if he had all the money in the world, he would still be there every season.
Mariano has joined these expeditions:
What skills do you bring to the job?
"Besides my quaifications as a historian, I am a skilled Zodiac driver. I earned my Fast Rescue Boats certificate in 2004. I am a scuba diver, kayaker, and skier. I am also a Wilderness First Responder and have Search and Rescue experience."
What keeps you coming back season after season?
"I can't imagine summer without working in the Arctic or Antarctica? I have to say the whole experience - the wildlife connection - the place itself and the people you meet make the difference. The polar regions are by far the best places on Earth."
If you could time travel, which historic expedition would you join, and why?
"Fridtjof Nansen's Fram Expedition. In my opinion he was pushing beyond the borders of understanding to prove a theory in which he believed. Then, of course, all the adventure side of it too."
Mariano's advice to Polar Travelers
"Do your homework before joining the trip. Then relax and let yourself be surprised by the polar regions."
