Michael Gatehouse
Michael, also known as Miguel, has never had a day in Antarctica that he didn't enjoy. The Australian began working at the bottom of the world in 1985 as an expedition diver and field support.
What skills do you bring to the job?
"Good communication skills and a boundless enthusiasm for Antarctica."
What keeps you coming back season after season?
"The people I meet and work with."
If you could time travel, what historic expedition would you join, and why?
"Sir Douglas Mawson's Australasian Antarctic Expedition. I spent a summer at Cape Denison working on the first archeological survey of Mawson's hut. The site has so much history you can almost hear the men and dogs. It would have been great to work with a leader like Mawson who inspired such incredible devotion from his men."
Michael's advice for Polar Travelers
"When you get there, find a quiet spot , sit down and take it all in. Antarctica will change you forever."
