Peter Schmidt Mikkelsen - SIRIUS Dog Patrol
From 1977 to 1979, Peter was a member of the SIRIUS dog sled patrol, a special task force in Greenland of the Royal Danish Navy. The primary purpose of SIRIUS is to maintain Danish/Greenlandic sovereignty over the most remote part of Greenland (North and Northeast Greenland). The patrolling is still done by men, dogs and sleds.
Peter has lived more than four years on Greenland's final frontier, traveling thousands of miles along its coast by dog sled, boat and kayak. He is a member of Norsk Polarklubb, the Arctic Club (UK), and the Scottish Arctic Club (UK). He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (UK) and the Explorers Club (USA).
Peter is the author of North-East Greenland 1906-60: The Trapper Era. In 2008, he led a 650 km (403 miles) dog sled expedition into Northeast Greenland National Park.
