About Jim Zakreski

Marine Biology Presenter & Guide

How did a kid from Saskatchewan, Canada, become a marine biologist? He moved to Vancouver Island! In 1994, Jim received his B.Sc. in Biology from the University of Victoria. A few stints as a marine biologist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada led him to realize that his greatest strength as a scientist was to be in the field.

For the past 21 years, Jim has been a captain and marine biologist in the whale-watching industry of southern Vancouver Island, where he hones his wildlife-spotting skills primarily in the search for orcas. He shares this passion for all creatures, great and small. Guiding people so that they, too, can enjoy these wonders comes natural to Jim.

Working as a marine biologist with Quark Expeditions in the Antarctic and Arctic has been a dream-come-true job for Jim. A keen photographer who enjoys a good laugh and a long Zodiac ride, he is always scanning the horizons for more adventures.
