Simon Harlow

Simon grew up by the sea on the southeast coast of England. His childhood passions of air and sea led him to a career in the Royal Navy as a helicopter pilot, instructor, and test pilot; flying from small ships at sea, from Arctic to Antarctic, and most latitudes in between; including a year on exchange in France which explains his French language skills. Since leaving the military he has continued flying helicopters, in the offshore industry and most recently as a search and rescue pilot. In his spare time Simon completed a master’s degree in Aviation Safety.

Simon’s most abiding aviation memory is flying in South Georgia in support of the British Antarctica Survey, a stunning mix of rock and ice contrasting with the rusting remnants of man’s exploitation of whales in Grytviken, a memory that has drawn him back to the Antarctic and to Ultramarine!

When at home Simon enjoys time with his family, walking, and making things, pride of place goes to his hand-built wooden Canadian canoe.
