Ryan is from Florenceville, New Brunswick, Canada. Growing up, his passion was hockey, playing and eventually coaching at the minor hockey and high-school levels. All that changed to a passion for the outdoors when he moved to Jasper, Alberta, in the Canadian Rockies after mountaineering, climbing and mountain biking got into his veins. Soon after moving back to the East Coast, his love for sea kayaking began, and he took his first stroke at a certified course in 2008. Since then, he has become a Paddle Canada sea kayak Level 4 paddler and Level 2 instructor and has taken BCU coastal water and open-water navigation courses. He holds an advanced remote first-responder certificate.
Ryan holds a university degree in business and pursued a professional accounting designation. During his time with a global food company, he worked in the corporate world and was sent to Europe. He also took the opportunity to work as a finance coordinator, operating out of Kandahar, Afghanistan, for 2 years. He took advantage of the travel benefits while in Afghanistan, and cycling in New Zealand, trekking in Nepal, doing self-drive safaris in Africa and sea kayaking in Sri Lanka are a few notable trips.
He is now in his fifth Antarctic season. He has only done 2 trips in the Arctic with Quark Expeditions, as he has been the manager of Adventure High Sea Kayaking in Grand Manan, New Brunswick, for the past 5 years.
Ryan loves to be outside, whether it is in a kayak or on foot. He is excited to be in Antarctica again, as he loves exploring new sites, meeting fascinating people and continuously learning about the area.
