During this Arctic adventure, two special guests enrich the vacation. Peter Schmidt Mikkelsen, a former member of Greenland’s SIRIUS dog patrol, plus explorer and documentarian John Murray.

Anadyr, Russia - The easternmost town in Russia and an important sea port for the Bering Sea.
Arctic Circle - The southern extremity of the 24-hour polar day ("midnight sun") and 24-hour sunless polar night.
Baffin Bay - Sea connecting Atlantic and Arctic oceans, choked most of the year with large numbers of icebergs.
Baffin Island, Canada - The fifth largest island in the world, it may be ‘Helluland’ from the Saga of Erik the Red.
Barents Sea - The fisheries of the area, in particular cod, are of great importance for both Norway and Russia.
Beaufort Sea - Ongoing boundary dispute between Canada and US has increased in worth due to likely presence of oil.
Bering Strait - It’s speculated that humans walked from Asia to North America across a land bridge in the strait.
Chukchi Sea - Named after the Chukchi people, who traditionally engaged in fishing, whaling and walrus hunting.
Chukotka Peninsula, Russia - The northeastern edge of Asia, where mining, hunting, trapping, reindeer and fishing are industries.
Davis Strait - Named for the English explorer John Davis, who explored the area while seeking a Northwest Passage.
Denmark Strait - During WWII, German battleship Bismarck sank the British battlecruiser HMS Hood in the strait.
East Siberian Sea - 70% of it is no deeper than 50 meters. Its coast is flat in the West and mountainous in the East.
Franz Josef Land - 191 ice-covered islands discovered in 1873 by Austro-Hungarians, taken over by the Soviets in 1926.
Ilulissat - Greenlandic for "the icebergs," it is the third largest settlement in Greenland.
Kangerlussuaq - Located at the head of a long fjord, the area is home to many muskoxen, caribou and gyrfalcons.
Murmansk, Russia - City and port in extreme NW Russia, home to the world's only fleet of nuclear powered icebreakers.
New Siberian Islands - Low-lying archipelago where fossil ivory, along with mammoth and other bones, can be found.
North Pole, 90 Degrees North - Located in the middle of the ocean amidst shifting sea ice, from here all directions point south.
Northwest Passage - Sea way connecting Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, sought by explorers for centuries as a trade route.
Novaya Zemlya - With two major islands and many small ones, this was a sensitive military area during the Cold War.
Ny Alesund - One of the four permanent settlements on the island of Spitsbergen, and home to a research village.
Scoresbysund - Greenlandic name means "Big House Dwellers." Area is known for polar bears, muskoxen, and seals.
Severnaya Zemlya - First noted in 1913 and charted in 1933, making it the last archipelago on Earth to be discovered.
Victoria Island, Canada - Though slightly larger than the island of Great Britain, it is actually named after Queen Victoria.
Wrangel Island - A breeding ground for polar bears (the highest density of dens in the world), seals, and lemmings.
