About Fiona Jones

Penguinologist

Fiona Jones is a PhD student at the University of Oxford based in the Department of Zoology. She works on the data generated by a network of remote, time lapse cameras positioned across the Antarctic Peninsula and surrounding Southern Ocean region, which are processed by the citizen science project Penguin Watch. Her PhD aims to use the data generated by Penguin Watch to examine the phenology of specific penguin colonies, in order to disentangle the effects of the threats currently facing them. These threats include climate change (and related changes in sea ice distribution), pollution and fishing (particularly of Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba), which is a keystone species in the Southern Ocean ecosystem).

Fiona completed her first degree in Biological Sciences at the University of Oxford, and then spent a year as a research assistant in the Palaeontology Department of the Natural History Museum, London, where she worked on a virtual reconstruction of an Ankylosaur braincase using CT scan images. She then completed an MSc in Climate Change at University College London, where her Master’s dissertation focused on early human evolution, and how it may have been influenced by environmental change.
