Breaking the Ice: The First Year in Antarctica (1899-1900)

Recording now available! Antarctic Heritage Trust are very proud to care for five historic explorer huts in Antarctica. Borchgrevink’s huts at Cape Adare are particularly special, as the only example remaining in the world of human’s first dwelling on any continent. On 17 February 1899, Borchgrevink’s British Antarctic (Southern Cross) Expedition landed at Cape Adare, one of the most inhospitable sites on earth, and set up base with a living hut and a stores hut. The huts were later used in 1911 by the six members of Scott’s Northern Party from his British Antarctic Expedition. In this webinar, you’ll learn more about the incredible year this first expedition team had furthering science and exploration as well as hear more about the Trust’s work conserving this site. Find out how Antarctic Heritage Trust’s mission to conserve, share and encourage the spirit of exploration is connecting the next generation with this remarkable legacy.
