About Mark Maftei

Expedition Guide

Biography

Mark hails from Victoria, British Columbia, where he studies colonial seabirds for Environment Canada.

From Ellesmere Island in the Canadian High Arctic to South Georgia Island in the Southern Ocean, Mark has a passion for seabirds that has taken him around the globe, but he has spent the last decade working across Northern Canada and Alaska, where he has conducted research in some of the most remote and poorly studied parts of the Arctic. In 2011, he founded the High Arctic Gull Research Group, a collaborative association of government and academic researchers as well as private partners. To date, this group has undertaken several ambitious projects to study some of the least known seabirds in the world at multiple sites across the circumpolar Arctic.

Mark has traveled to the Antarctic peninsula and the Southern Ocean islands. On board, if he isn’t lecturing on seabirds in the lounge or discussing seabirds over dinner, he can probably be found on deck watching seabirds. (He also has a fondness for marine mammals, since they are often accompanied by interesting seabirds.)
