Alex Deschenes-Philion

Assistant Expedition Leader, Paddle Excursion Guide, Quark Academy Trainer, Sea Kayak Guide

Alex has always been drawn to the outdoors and has a deep love of our environment. This explains his many travels and passions including snowboarding, trekking, cycling, canoeing, and kayaking, which have created opportunities to explore different parts of the world.

Throughout his outdoor career, Alex worked in various roles in forestry, bungee jumping and as a lifeguard before a mixture of luck and stubbornness drew him to the Canadian Arctic. Over the last few years, he has had the opportunity to work on different land-based projects across Canada’s North, including the first heliskiing operation on Baffin Island. Like the Arctic tern, Alex decided to migrate south in the austral summer to work as a kayak guide in Antarctica. Exploring the southern latitudes has only strengthened his passion for the Polar Regions.

In addition to his outdoor experience, Alex holds a bachelor’s degree in geography from the University of Quebec in Montreal, and a master’s degree in international development specializing in environmental sustainability from the University of Ottawa. When not guiding in the polar regions or out on an adventure, you can find him building houses or mountain biking in Mont Tremblant, Quebec. Alex is looking forward to sharing his experiences and passion for the polar regions to help you fall in love with these incredible places.
