Santiago lived in Antarctica for more than 28 months (at Esperanza Station in the Antarctic Peninsula, and at Carlini Base, formerly known as Jubany Station, on King George Island), working as a marine biologist in the field of coastal ecology for Instituto Antártico Argentino. For the past 16 years, he has been guiding natural history and birding trips through the main natural areas of Argentina and central and southern Chile. Since 1999, he has written and published 8 natural history handbooks about the main areas he has visited.
