Matthew Moran

History Presenter

Matthew Bellhouse Moran is the Executive Director of the Scottish Maritime Museum, where he leads one of the UK’s most important collections preserving over 300 years of Scotland’s shipbuilding heritage. His career has taken him from conserving one of the world’s oldest ships, HMS Unicorn, to curating at the South Georgia Museum in the South Atlantic in 2015, where he developed a lasting interest in polar history and exploration. Matthew calls Scotland home and has spent much of his life working with historic vessels, artefacts and archives. He enjoys sharing the human stories behind polar exploration, from dramatic feats of endurance to the quieter, everyday moments that shaped life in remote places. Outside of his work, Matthew enjoys change ringing on the bells of Glasgow Cathedral, an ancient tradition that involves a lot of ropes (but he’s still useless at tying knots). Matthew particularly enjoys seeing guests encounter their first elephant seal pups.
