Malc Ellis

Expedition Guide, Logistics Coordinator

Almost a true Manxman, having been brought up on the Isle of Man, Malc has spent much of his time in, on and around the sea. A degree in Maritime Geography at Cardiff University fueled his interest in marine disciplines. As a volunteer rescue worker, he spent 7 years as a Senior Helmsman for the RNLI and was part of an Auxiliary Coastguard search-and-rescue team while teaching outdoor activities on the South Wales coast.
In 1994 Malc started working in travel, mostly in corporate risk and safety management for the TUI Travel Group supporting over 200 businesses across 180 countries. Malc first visited the Polar Regions in 2010 when he had his ‘polar epiphany’ and subsequently resigned his corporate role (twice!) to join the Quark Expeditions team in the field as a Zodiac driver and naturalist guide; He then resigned a third time (permanently!) and moved to Canada to work at Quark’s head office.
As Quark’s Senior Vice President – Operations, Malc’s role encompassed the day-to-day management of Quark’s 270 strong Field & Shore Operations team and the strategic and commercial aspects of Quark’s Operations, including vessel, hotel & ground Ops contracting. In addition, Malc was deeply involved in the design, delivery and deployment of Quark Expeditions’ purpose-built polar expedition vessel, Ultramarine, entering service in 2022. After a short period of time off Malc has decided to return to the field and looks forward to sharing time with you onboard, on the water and ashore.
His advice – “be prepared for the Polar regions to change you”!
