About Mark Scriver

Paddle Guide

Biography

An avid Nordic skier and paddler of all types of craft, Mark has been passionate about paddling, instructing and guiding outdoor activities his entire life. He started his teaching career at an outdoor center in Ontario in the early 1980s and has guided many multi-day wilderness canoe, kayak and hiking trips in the Canadian Arctic and Greenland ever since.

Passionate about sea kayaking in particular, Mark has led over 50 trips as a sea kayak guide on expedition cruises in the Arctic and Antarctic. He calls it the perfect craft for the varied conditions you can experience on the sea, as you can explore intricate rocky coastlines, glide silently with sea birds and marine mammals, push through brash ice, be humbled by glaciers and icebergs, or be carried effortlessly on a following sea.

Mark also has a background in instructing whitewater paddling and was on the Canadian whitewater freestyle team for several years in the 1990s. He also helped Paddle Canada develop an instructional curriculum for stand-up paddleboarding, another interest of his.

Though he has explored rivers and coastlines on 6 continents, Mark doesn’t need to go too far afield. He’s happy just being outside, sharing his passion for the outdoors with others.
