About Mauricio Alvarez
Expedition Guide
Mauricio was born and raised in Punta Arenas, Chile. Growing up in the Magallanes region of Patagonia, near the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, he developed a passion for the land and a curiosity for travel. After having a short stint in Washington to finish high school, he returned to Chile to study engineering and cinematography.
Traveling around Europe for eight years during his twenties, Mauricio became fascinated with both the history of the Old World and the history of map-making. This led to the long task of collecting and studying the cartography developed by the Europeans.
Mauricio regularly participates in specialization courses to better understand austral ecosystems and is involved with the phenological registration and measurement of plants, glaciers, waters, birds and other wildlife. Committed to studying southern Patagonia and conserving this beloved environment, he promotes the formation of partnerships between scientific projects and the travel industry. In 2015, he co-founded 'Deep in Patagonia', an adventure tour company, where he develops and organizes exploration travel programs and related photography and film projects. Mauricio has worked as a naturalist and director of expedition cruises since 2005.
