Sean Waters

Sean grew up at the Outward Bound School in New Zealand’ South Island, and quickly developed a passion for all things active and outdoors. He completed a Bachelor and Master of Science in Geology, complete with his first visit to the polar regions where he completed his Masters thesis on granites in the Transantarctic Mountains.

During following twenty-five years, Sean worked and recreated in the mountains, rivers and seas of the world. He was a mountaineering and kayaking instructor in tertiary outdoor leadership training institutions, Outward Bound and the New Zealand Army, as well as field safety work for the British and New Zealand Antarctic programmes. Lightweight, exploratory mountaineering expeditions captured his attention for a decade or so with trips to the Andes, Patagonia, Himalaya and the Tien Shan ranges amongst others.

In 2009, Sean returned to his roots as a geologist in the jungles of west Africa and went on to complete a PhD in aquatic geochemistry. He has worked for the last eight years a research scientist in Nelson, New Zealand which is a place he loves to call home. Relaxing takes the form of spending time with his wife and friends on mountain bikes, skis or kayaks. Returning to the polar regions has rekindled Sean’s love of the landscapes, natural history and adventure of the high latitudes which he is excited to share with his fellow voyagers.
